Damian took his time to bring in the various items from the car. His steps stuttered as his heartbeat ramped up. He gripped a porch column and leaned against it. Sweat poured from his skin. He slowly inhaled the crisp air, enjoying the chill that rushed through his body.
Taking his time to descend the steps, he slid behind the wheel and started the car. He moved the automobile a few feet away to hide it within a copse of trees. Damian jogged back and realized he wasn’t out of breath. The last couple of times when he’d had to run with Rebecca he’d been left winded. He’d tried to hide it from her and if she’d noticed she didn’t say a word. Snatching the remaining items from the top step, he walked into the house. The sound of his stomach growling sent him looking for food.
Midday he checked on Rebecca and found her curled into a tight ball and moaning into the pillow she was wrapped around. Red sweat dotted her forehead and face, coloring the pristine white sheets beneath. Her skin was hot. He jogged into the bathroom, dampened a cloth in cold water and returned to place it on her head. The soft curls brushed his palms sending currents of electricity through his limbs.
He pulled his hand away and made a fist. His dick was twitching in his pants. He swallowed and left the room, wiping a hand down his face. Confusion whipped through him in tandem with his desire. Damian moved to the porch where he remained staring out into the woods that surrounded him.
He finally rose from the chair as the sun started to dip behind the hills. In the cabin he could hear Rebecca stirring. He stopped and cocked his head, astounded. She was deep within the cabin and hearing the mattress springs whine as she shifted in bed shouldn’t have been possible. Anxious, he opened the screen door, allowing it to slam behind him. The idea that he should note what was happening to him briefly crossed his mind until he met her brown gaze. His muscles tightened as he stared at her.
“You need to feed.” He moved in her direction.
“I can’t. Don’t want to hurt you. Leave.” She scrambled to the other side of the bed.
“The reason the virus is moving so fast within you is because you’re in a weakened state. You’re hungry.”
“No!”
“I know you won’t hurt me.” He stopped at the foot of the bed.
She snorted.
